The video follows Bishan Kaur — wife of town founder Mayo Singh — and her experiences as Paldi grew from a small lumber camp into a thriving town.
For the first time in the program’s 32-year history, Canada’s latest Heritage Minute featured the largely untold stories of South Asian Canadians.
This Heritage Minute introduces the mill town of Paldi, BC, through the eyes of a Sikh woman, Bishan Kaur. After landing in B.C. at the turn of the 20th century, Singh, along with 35 other Sikh lumbermen, established the Mayo Lumber Company on Vancouver Island in 1917. As the settlement grew, buildings were erected — there were bunkhouses, cookhouses, a school and also a Sikh gurdwara and Japanese temple.
“Paldi, B.C. was a small community in size, but its impact on Canada and the lives of the South Asian community endures to this day,” said Anthony Wilson-Smith, president and CEO of Historica Canada, the film’s creator,“In many ways, the struggles, resilience, contributions and ultimate triumphs of those living in Paldi reflect the larger picture of the evolution of inclusive multiculturalism across all of Canada.”vibrant Japanese community was among the first to disappear.
