Paul MacEwan served for 33 consecutive years at MLA for Cape Breton Nova, the longest in the province since Confederation. He is the subject of a new book, “Politics on the Edge: The Remarkable Career of Paul MacEwan,” by Ian Stewart. Contributed - ccSYDNEY — You can use a number of adjectives to describe Paul MacEwan.

In 1985, Stewart, longtime professor of politics at Acadian University, wrote a scholarly article about MacEwan and described him as a maverick. To his surprise, MacEwan, who died in 2017, not only read it, he responded with a lengthy letter chastising him over his choice of words. “One of the reasons why he was able to stay in office for 33 consecutive years was he worked hard for his constituents every day of the year — and it was not just his supporters, he worked hard for all of his constituents in the hope that even opponents could turn and every so often he did turn them,” he said.

As a result, he decided to donate all of the author’s royalties to a scholarship in MacEwan’s name that will be awarded to a graduating Cape Breton University political science student each year.
