The province has released the feedback it received from a review of its animal protection legislation. FileST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Newfoundland and Labrador government has released the feedback it received from the public to improve the province'sThe Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture sought public and stakeholder feedback from April to June 2022 to inform plans to strengthen the legislation.
Concerns about the act included that it is outdated, not being enforced and does not clearly indicate to whom abuse should be reported. Suggestions to strengthen the legislation included imposing higher fines or imprisonment for animal abusers, allowing animal rescue groups to remove an animal in distress implementing time limits on tethering and cracking down on backyard breeding and puppy mills.
The department received 324 submissions through the online questionnaire. It also held three virtual sessions with targeted stakeholders, where 33 individuals representing 12 organizations participated and received 29 written submissions via email from stakeholders and members of the public. The feedback is taken into consideration as the government explores potential amendments to the current legislation. The act aims to ensure that animals are protected and treated humanely. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
