MP Michael Chong says he has received personal threats, in addition to threats on his family cdnpoli
Chong said he doesn’t know what has happened to his family in Hong Kong, because since China took more direct control of the territory and brought in national security legislation he has had no contact with them.
Several of Chong’s fellow Conservatives asked Chong about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion that he was unaware of the threats until the story was released in the Globe and Mail, asking Chong if they thought that was credible. Liberal MP Ryan Turnbull cited several public reports about foreign interference during former prime minister Stephen Harper’s time in office and asked Chong whether the former prime minister also missed the file.
“It became clear that this was an authoritarian, much more authoritarian state that was using threat activities as a way to promulgate its authoritarian model governments around the world,” he said in response to Turnbull. “I don’t think the foreign interference threat activities on Canadian soil were nearly as intense as they have become in the last five years.”
“Canada needs to catch up and emulate the best practices of peer jurisdictions to ensure that critical national security and intelligence issues do not become bottlenecked, within the bureaucracy, and the executive,:” he said. “It is my hope that real change will result from what has happened. change that will strengthen our national security intelligence to better protect all Canadians and Canadian institutions.
