In honour of Mother’s Day, we’re sharing this column by former Northern Life and Sudbury.com columnist Erna de Burger-Fex
They have played an integral part in my life and are still doing so even though both mothers have passed away years ago. Alice gave birth to me in Holland in 1941 and Annette gave birth to my husband Alex that same year in Canada – in Sudbury, in fact. Both of these women had difficult lives, but for these two mothers, their families were their priority all of their lives.
She did receive help from her family, the Guimonds, and knew she needed to accept that for the sake of her offspring. It could not have been easy for her to do so. We fully realized that she came to this difficult decision due to the deep love she felt for our father and her children. This strength was severely tested in 1960 when Alice’s 15- year-old son Willy was killed in a car accident very close to home.
Working hard, Alice and Annette set important examples for their families and for me, and by adopting this philosophy the de Burger children and the Fex children have fashioned successful lives for their own families.
