A 38-year-old man has been charged after allegedly swindling over $60,000 on an online romance scam.
Peel Regional Police said the suspect and the victim kept close contact for over six months after meeting on an online dating website in January 2021.
The suspect posed as a contractor working offshore in South Africa, who alleged to be in “emergent” need of money and committed to reimbursing it. Police said the victim was deceived into wire transferring bitcoin and over $35,000 to an exchange account in South Africa. Lincoln Marquis, a 38-year-old man from Mississauga, faces counts of fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
Police said he was released on “undertaking” and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in June.
