The Canadian Armed Forces says it has received hundreds of applications from permanent residents interested in joining the military, but getting those prospective recruits into uniform could take up to two years.

Chief of the defence staff Gen. Wayne Eyre officially opened the military's doors to all permanent residents in October, in direct response to an unprecedented personnel crisis that has left the Armed Forces scrambling for new recruits.

"I'll be honest with you, it has a bit has been a bit of a surprise to us as to how much uptake the permanent resident initiative has taken," said Col. Nick Roby. "And we are obviously super excited about the opportunity." It currently takes about eight months to properly vet Canadian citizens who apply for the military, and that has been flagged as a significant obstacle in getting more people into basic training.

While that would require agreement from the prospective recruit, Roby said: "This work with IRCC is critical to the success of us enrolling permanent-resident Canadians quickly, or a lot quicker." Nearly 4,800 recruits were enrolled the following fiscal year as lockdowns and restrictions were eased, but officials say they are getting about half the number of applicants needed per month to meet the goal of adding 5,900 members this year.

Defence analyst Stefanie von Hlatky, of Queen's University, said while the move has the potential to boost recruiting efforts and diversity in the military, application processing will be a key challenge.
