Except for the spruce trees — which I don’t really count — everything else that was potentially green was encased in ice or covered with snow.I didn’t really have very high hopes as I rolled east but I thought that maybe the south-facing slopes of the Bow River valley by Carseland might be a good place to look. Though I haven’t been out this way for a while, I was pretty sure that the snow would be melted from the hillsides.
I pulled the truck up beside one that was digging away at its burrow entrance. It stopped pawing, gave me a look and then popped down the hole. Within seconds, though, it was back up and digging again, pausing every few paw-fulls to look up and give a squeak. Cheeky little thing.The snow cover on the south side of the river valley was even deeper than on the north, astonishingly so. Here, it was halfway up the fencelines on the flats and way deeper than that in the ditches and drifts.
