The federal electoral boundaries commission of B.C. submitted a report to Parliament recently proposing significant changes to many of B.C.’s federal ridings, including ones that would add a new riding, Vernon-Monashee, in southeastern B.C.; see Courtenay and Kelowna represented by two MPs each; and significantly redraw election boundaries in the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m.
The report proposes splitting Kelowna into two ridings, for example, Kelowna, and Okanagan Lake West-South Kelowna. It gives the city two MPs but faced significant opposition during public hearings. McDonald said that one of the more significant changes in the Lower Mainland was in the southeast corner of Vancouver where a new riding, Vancouver Fraserview-South Burnaby, could put NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh into competition with Liberal Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. The Vancouver Fraserview-South Burnaby riding would replace Sajjan’s riding of Vancouver South and part of Burnaby South, held by Singh.
In Surrey, the board of trade disagreed with changes that shifted some neighbourhoods to the ridings of Delta and the newly created Langley Township, which extends northwest along the Fraser River.
