What happens next in the quest to save the Greenwich Fire Department will likely be confidential.
Greenwich Fire Chief Jason Ripley says he hopes an upcoming mediation process will help provide some clarity for community members and volunteer firefighters concerned over the future delivery of fire protection services in the district. - FileGREENWICH, N.S. — Outstanding questions regarding the status and future delivery of fire protection services in the Greenwich, Kings County, fire district may be settled through mediation.
Given that the upcoming process has to do with mediation, Ripley said the discussions would be confidential. When there is a resolution, the public would be informed.Read moreRipley said there isn’t a lot about the process that he could say at this point, as he doesn’t want to prejudice the upcoming conversations or outcome. He hopes for a resolution that will give the situation some closure.
In July 2022, through the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the provincial government stepped in to offer the services of a mediator. “On our part, we commissioned an evidence-based report. We still don’t have a copy of that report, but it will be a chance for people to review what is being proposed,” Conrod said.
This resulted in outcry from residents served by the Greenwich Fire Department. At a March 10, 2022, meeting, Kings County council voted to rescind the Feb. 22 motion. The motion was later rescinded by Wolfville council and the Greenwich Fire Commission as well. As the municipality committed to previously, Conrod confirmed that public information sessions would be held in affected communities regarding a new station location or service consolidation.
