The Coles notes that got us here are as follows: After years and years of studies on the impact of distance in golf, the USGA and R&A have chosen now to take a stand. The new rule will change the testing criteria for golf balls used in elite men’s competitions , and, in the end, knock about 15 yards or so off the drives of the world’s best players. This plan will save the game, or ruin the game, depending who you listen to. Got it? Yeah, didn’t think so.
One argument for making this change is that some of the world’s best and most historic courses have been outgrown by unbridled technological advances in equipment. The problem for the governing bodies is that it was their job to bridle them, and for decades they failed to do so. Another argument is that the modern game has shifted the power-artistry balance too far towards power, making the game less interesting.
The proposed rollback is now in the governing bodies’ comment-period stage until the end of the summer, during which time feedback from golfers, and the industry is welcomed. I, for one , intend to listen and keep an open mind because there is a unique chance throughout this process to better understand what people love about the game, and it would be a shame to miss that.
