One of the wisest and most productive workers ever was Sherlock Holmes, who was an early hybrid worker. His clients consulted him in the sitting-room of his suite in Baker Street, but his detective work did not consist entirely of reasoning from an armchair at home. Nor would it have been possible to work that way.
There are several lessons from this episode concerning the Hound of the Baskervilles. First, if the office has windows, they should be kept closed to create a concentrated atmosphere. Second, while having employees sit in a box to think could be, as Holmes said, excessive, employers might be wise to provide individual offices for employees where possible — particularly those who must do the most thinking.
Another lesson from Holmes is that the strategy many of today’s employers have of trying to coax workers into the office with free lunches is likely to backfire. Feeding workers detracts from their ability to engage in serious brain-work. In the Adventure of the Mazarin Stone, Holmes had for days replaced food with tobacco, explaining to Watson that “the faculties become refined when you starve them.
