While the WHO has not yet called an end to the global pandemic, it is clear we are moving steadily into a post-pandemic world. With an end in sight — and to be clear, I am still not convinced we are ready to totally move into a world that is focused on “after the pandemic” as opposed to “during the pandemic” — we are shifting gears, and sadly, that also appears to mean less concern about mental health and well-being instead of more.
We’ve heard a lot about the Great Resignation and the move to Quiet Quitting. As people have returned to their offices, leaving their home offices , it’s become clear that in many workplaces, things haven't changed. One survey I read reported a respondent saying they quit after having to come into the office for a 15-minute meeting even when faced with a two hours round-trip commute. The company’s refusal to accommodate, despite a stellar record in productivity, was the final straw.
This week we have also heard about how this province has seen a 25 per cent increase in suicide rates; even more shocking, the rate has doubled in Labrador in 2021, a time when we saw two waves of the COVID virus shut down the province in February and again in December. Good mental health is not just a matter of good luck. It is often a result of privilege when you have money, resources and resilience to weather the storms. Without work, you have no financial resources to access private care; in fact, you may not even have a health benefits plan. Perhaps your family is not able to help, either through estrangement or poverty.
