Marion Boyd, Ontario’s first woman attorney general who helped point the way to same-sex benefits and approved controversial plea deal with Karla Homolka, has died.
She was dubbed a “giant killer” after defeating then-premier David Peterson in his London riding in the 1990 election that swept Bob Rae’s New Democrats to power., went on to become Ontario’s first female and non-lawyer attorney general, approving a controversial manslaughter plea deal with Karla Homolka in the murders of Niagara teens Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy.
“Marion Boyd’s death is a deeply sad event. She was a source of much wise counsel in her roles in education, social services and as attorney general. She also had a terrific sense of humour and was a great friend.” Boyd was Rae’s first education minister before being moved to minister of community and social services and then attorney general until the NDP lost the 1995 election to the Mike Harris Progressive Conservatives. Boyd was one of few New Democrat MPPs to hold her seat in the Harris landslide before being defeated in 1999.
“I remember her for so many other things,” said New Democrat MPP Peggy Sattler , speaking in part of the same-sex benefits Bill 167 that was defeated when several New Democrat MPPs voted against their own government.
