SAN JOSE – The Maple Leafs strayed into dangerous waters on Thursday night as their road trip reached the Pacific.
Karlsson atoned in the extra period, the Sharks breaking up a William Nylander pass in the slot to set up his breakaway. The Leafs are now 4-3-1, and have lost two of three on this trip.
Not even the ‘magic’ of a David Kampf goal could save the Leafs, who lost for the first time in 16 games when the hard-working centre scores. Logan Couture, already with an opening-minute goal, scored uncontested from the back door on the 5-on-3, his 300th NHL tally, then Timo Meier tipped Couture’s shot that initially triggered hat trick chapeaus before Meier was credited.
