A Surrey man who fatally shot his girlfriend by accident and then tried to cover up the crime has been sentenced to seven years in jail.
In February, Harjot Deo, 25, pleaded guilty to the Aug. 1, 2017, manslaughter of Bhavkiran Dhesi, 19, and to interfering with her body. If not for an alert security guard, who spotted the blaze and called the authorities, the vehicle with the body inside would have been destroyed. She noted that the most aggravating factor in the case was Dhesi’s “extremely reckless” use of a firearm but also took into account the fact that Deo was now leading a different life with different goals and had become a “responsible young man with a prosocial lifestyle.”
Deo will have 239 days knocked off his sentence after getting credit for pre-sentence custody. The judge refused to give him extra credit for restrictive bail conditions as requested by his lawyer.Article content
