Christopher Vladislov Sawicki, who was taken into custody by members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary late Tuesday afternoon, will undergo a week-long psychiatric assessment before he returns to court Oct. 19. Sawicki had stabbed George Benoit, 57, at least 30 times, burned down his shed and stole his vehicle. The court heard evidence from experts for both the Crown and defence indicating Sawicki was suffering from bipolar mood disorder and had been experiencing a manic episode at the time he committed the crimes that rendered him incapable of appreciating the nature of his actions.
