As far back as I can remember, my mom was always making something. I’m not sure where she even found the energy, with working full time and running after my brother and I, as well as our furry friends. Somehow, she always seemed to have two or three projects on the go.
Then, there was etching. I think this is where my love of flamingos stemmed. The moment I saw the mirror with my name in calligraphy next to the slender bird with the coy smile balancing without effort on one leg, I was in love. When asked to make advertising banners for my uncle’s hot air balloons, of course she figured out a way. After spreading the huge bolts of material across the basement floor, she’d project the stencil she’d created onto it, draw the letter outlines, then fill them in with the fattest-tipped markers we’d ever seen.motorcycle seats.
Lately, she’s been making blankets for pets, and has recently been talking about making some for the dogs at shelters. It was Easter when my mom made the Easter tree for my children, tying cellophane bags holding stuffed bunnies and chocolates, from different lengths of pastel ribbons, making it the most memorable ever.
The day after I’d commented my hands were cold from drinking my smoothie, she presented me with the cutest cozy, perfect for any cold drink. When my mom became ill years ago, to the point we almost lost her, along with watching funny shows, she discovered jewelry-making, immersing herself in learning how to work wire, sea glass and crystal into stunning one-of-a-kind pieces for the business she and my brother eventually started; pieces designed for family, friends, strangers, as well as wedding and gala attendants.
