Lucy the elephant at 47 not fit for relocation from Edmonton, concludes review yeg
The annual, independent assessment is required by Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums in order to maintain Lucy in Edmonton as a lone elephant. She has been assessed yearly by outside experts for more than a decade.
The assessment was performed by international elephant veterinary and husbandry experts Dr. Frank Goeritz, Dr. Thomas Hildebrandt, Dr. Patricia London and Ingo Schmidinger.Postmedia, file Despite that, the city worked to find her a suitable companion. The first try was in the late ’80s when she met a two-year-old African elephant that had been orphaned in Zimbabwe but the two didn’t bond. Months later, the zoo introduced a baby orphaned African elephant, Samantha. In 1989, the zoo said Lucy had embraced the motherly role.
In December 2020, renowned primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall weighed in on the controversy, calling on city council to transfer Lucy from the zoo to a sanctuary in Tennessee.
