Payne, who identifies using the pronouns they and them, is a 2022 graduate of the Alberta University of the Arts, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, but they stuck with the Stampede youth artist competition for a fifth year because of the positive experiences since the program started.Article content
Growing up in Calgary, they said the Calgary Stampede is the backdrop for many memories, and they connect with western culture because they have ties to farming. The contest also provides successful applicants with mentorship opportunities and hands-on learning experiences.
