Lucy the Lobster rests on a piece of the new lobster fishery tartan, officially launched by the Cape Sable Historical Society the day following Lucy’s Groundhog Day prediction. KATHY JOHNSON - Kathy JohnsonBARRINGTON, N.S. — “What a beautiful tartan,” commented Kilted Chef Alain Bosse at Lucy the Lobster's Groundhog Day prediction on Feb. 2 in North East Point, referring to the small piece of handwoven wool decorating the top of Lucy’s weather-predicting lobster trap perch.
Fibre artist Linda Symonds, senior heritage interpreter at the Barrington Woolen Mill Museum, talks about the tartan she designed to celebrate the lobster fishery tartan. The colours in the lobster fishery tartan are red to represent lobster, three shades of blue; light, medium and navy, along with white, to represent the ocean and the various ways it can look. "It is intended to recognize the contribution of lobster fishers, their families and related industries to culture and heritage,” reads the tartan's registration with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
The lobster fishery tartan is the second tartan created by artisans at the Barrington Woolen Mill Museum. In 2015, the Municipality of Barrington tartan was created and registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
