Dave Feschuk: LIV might be getting the last laugh with Brooks Koepka leading the Masters
Nobody’s laughing about the money, of course. You can cast theas smart capitalists or immoral sellouts for accepting the lucrative paydays from their new Saudi-backed overseers in exchange for forsaking the PGA Tour. Those millions are real and reportedly guaranteed.
As play was halted early into Saturday’s third round due to another day of grim weather, a glimpse at the leaderboard made a compelling argument to the contrary. But considering amateur Sam Bennett will begin Sunday in sole possession of third place, seven shots back of Koepka at 6 under, and that the next-nearest professionals reside eight shots back of the leader — well, even if there’s plenty of golf to go, the 87th Masters is beginning to look like a two-man race, Koepka vs. Rahm., it’s hard to make the case that LIV Golf hasn’t outperformed expectations against considerable odds. Twelve of the 18 LIV golfers made the cut here.
Justin Thomas, another vocal advocate of the PGA Tour, shot an improbable second-round 78, including a back-nine 42, to miss the cut by a stroke.make the cut at the Masters for a record-tying 23rd consecutive time, Woods spent Saturday limping badly on his reconstructed right leg. Seven holes into his third round when play was aborted, Woods was already 6 over, leaving him last among the 54 players remaining.
