Festival celebrates writers and artists of Asian heritage, including poet David Ly, novelist Simon Johnston and memoirist Winnie L. Cheung.
Like Lee, Cheung worked with a parent, in this case her mother Mei-fung Lee, to get childhood memories down on paper. Their book, Childhood Lost, is a memoir about Mei-fung’s life during the Sino-Japanese War . Cheung translated her mother’s story into English and did background research; her daughter, Josephine A. Chow, provided illustrations.
A pharmacist by training, Sharon Lee admits that her writing experience was “non-existent” before trying to collect her father’s memories in a narrative. Sharon Lee helped her father, Roy Kurita, tell his story in a new memoir, Growing Up Nisei: Boyhood Tales of a Japanese Canadian. Lee will be at a May 13 signing and May 14 panel at this year’s LiterASIAN Writers Festival.“I would call him once a week and get him started with a tidbit, and he would tell me these stories. I’d sit at my computer and just type away.”
“We were originally just going to put it together for the grandchildren,” she said. “But just over a year ago, my father had a stroke. Rob called me up and said, ‘Sharon, we have to get this book done. Your father has to see it.’ So, he started to put it together and to give it some direction, like ideas for chapters. The book came together, and Rob helped publish it for me.”Article content
