In response to questions from Indigenous leaders a senior Trudeau cabinet minister said he\u0027d look at radically altering the constitution.
Lametti was speaking to a meeting of Assembly of First Nations held in Ottawa last week when two different chiefs, from two different parts of the country, asked him to take away provincial responsibility for natural resources.
David Lametti, an academic and a former law professor before entering politics, would know this and know this is part of why his statement that he would commit to “looking at that” would be controversial. “Those resources were given to provinces without ever asking one Indian if it was OK to do that or what benefits would the First Nations expect to receive by Canada consenting to that arrangement,” Chief Maracle said.Article content
The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte arrived in Ontario at the same time as United Empire Loyalists who had also fought on the side of the British in the American Revolution. While most Mohawks went with Joseph Brant to the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve, a smaller group went to the Bay of Quinte.
