The good news is, the Trudeau Liberals have decided to delay the implementation of their next steps in offering medical assistance in dying.

Opponents of euthanasia said we would end up on a slippery slope, where vulnerable and at-risk people would be pressured to end their lives with the help of a doctor. I don’t think most of us saw how quickly we would head to such a dark place as a country. A survey of 1,516 Canadians conducted last weekend found that two-thirds of the population doesn’t know about the government’s plans to expand medical assistance in dying to those with mental health concerns. The Leger poll for Postmedia found 43% of respondents agreed that those with depression, bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia should be allowed to seek out MAID while 42% said no, with the rest not answering.
Part of the feedback the government was getting came from the Association of Chairs of Psychiatry in Canada. The organization includes the heads of psychiatry departments at all 17 medical schools across the country.
