At best our police services have \u0022interupted\u0022 the activities of China\u0027s police stations here but no one have been charged, unlike in the US.
Chiu wanted to follow the example of the Americans, the Australians and others in making sure that anyone acting on behalf of a foreign government would be required to register, like a lobbyist. For his troubles he was targeted for defeat by the Chinese government and subject to a disinformation campaign that claimed all Canadians born in China would have to register and would be discriminated against.
That’s not the case, it was never the case, but it’s what China put forward. Which is why it was so disconcerting to hear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau put forward the idea that requiring people to register if they are working in Canada for a foreign government was somehow a form of discrimination. “One has to only think of the internment of Japanese citizens or Japanese Canadians or Italian Canadians during the past World Wars to know that we must be very, very careful with these things,” Trudeau said., one of these things is not like the other. Telling people who are acting on behalf of a foreign government they have to register isn’t even close to rounding people up and putting them in internment camps.
In the United States, they protect their people. In Canada, our leaders repeat Beijing’s talking points that to crack down on interference in Canada is a form of racism. If the Canadian government had followed Kenny Chiu’s lead two years ago, we could be arresting and charging people just like the Americans.
