Toronto’s long-awaited return to the playoffs begins with a thud as Tampa Bay takes full control early in opener, wins 7-3
won in seven games and eventually reached the Stanley Cup final for the third straight time.
It ended up 7-3 in a mess of a performance by a team that is desperate to make a lengthy run and exorcise demons of the past. Tampa Bay now leads 1-0 with Game 2 again at the rink off Bay Street. The Maple Leafs looked slow and disorganized at the start, got stuck in their own end, were beaten to pucks and allowed two power plays. At the same time they couldn’t dent Tampa Bay’s goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Toronto had finished second in the Atlantic Division, well ahead of third-place Tampa Bay. The Maple Leafs also won two of three skirmishes between the teams during the regular season. Nice, but meaningless unless that success carries over to when it countsin a row before they fell in six games last summer to Colorado. That means they entered the opening round having won 11 of their last 12 playoff series.
Fans booed and Bunting stood shouting at the referees from the penalty box even as replays clearly showed a nasty elbow was thrown. Earlier, they had booed the officials when Auston Matthews fell without being touched. Samsonov was pulled after allowing 23 goals on 29 shots; Joseph Woll played the third period in mop-up duty. Vasilevskiy stopped 28 of 31 shots to backstop the win for Tampa.
