Pablo Rodriguez says \u0022Individual users, influencers, will not be captured\u0022 by Bill C\u002D11, which targets platforms like Netflix and YouTube.
Bill C-11 sets up the CRTC to bring streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube into the Canadian content system that traditional broadcasters and TV providers already contribute to. Rodriguez said in his statement that “Bill C-11 is about streaming platforms contributing to Canadian culture in a more direct and meaningful way.”
That document isn’t available yet, and a draft version will be published online in the next month or so. The government will then consult on the document for at least 30 days before issuing a final version. “Stakeholders, artists, producers, social media creators — Canadians can go online and provide their feedback on our draft policy direction,” the minister’s office said.
CRTC chair Vicky Eatrides has said the CRTC will listen to the opinions of Canadians while it considers how to implement the legislation. The regulator is expected to soon launch the public consultation on implementing Bill C-11.
