We need to build infrastructure for future water supply sooner rather than later

In regards to Daphne Bramham’s article, “Water tests the limits of good regional governance,” it’s obvious to anyone who studies hydrology and climate science that what we’re experiencing now has been predicted.Sign up to know what's really happening by reading daily editorials and commentary by British Columbia's opinion leadersBy clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Strategically thinking, we might want to start building the infrastructure sooner, before it’s too late.In her column, Daphne Bramham points out that the Lower Mainland will be challenged to supply water to its steadily growing population with major expansions at two reservoirs in response to global atmospheric warming. But the water supply could be significantly impaired if a wildfire burned bare the mountain slopes around a major reservoir.

Homeowners with hot tubs, swimming pools, and automated lawn watering systems would pay more, and everyone else might pay less based on their actual consumption. All new homes in the Lower Mainland should be required by municipal bylaw to have a water meter installed. Owners of existing homes should be given an incentive to retrofit a water meter. Wireless water meters are available that make data collection for billing inexpensive for municipalities.
