The downfall of Jason Kenney will reverberate beyond AlbertaJason Kenney now turns his attention to such federal issues as free trade, immigration and foreign policy. Meanwhile, our hapless PM continues to micromanage such issues as health care, natural resources, and daycare, which are supposed to fall under provincial jurisdiction.
The division of powers in the Canadian federation has evolved over the years but an Alberta sovereignty act would give unprecedented new powers not only to Alberta but, by implied extension, all provinces. Federal laws are not a menu from which provinces select what they like, that would be a recipe for anarchy. If the Supreme Court were to approve an Alberta sovereignty act it would weaken Canada as a unified state and create provinces as semi-independent, pseudo-statelets.
There is nothing wrong with the idea that our Constitution should change so that it remains relevant, but we are being dishonest and undemocratic when we fail to acknowledge these living-tree changes and fail to ask the people if they want the wording of the Constitution to be changed to reflect the law.
The article tended to focus on Maine, which borders Quebec and New Brunswick; what is stopping “Maine game,” specifically the whitetail deer found in all three regions, from coming and being hunted for food in a neighbouring Canadian region?Article content
