ICYMI: LETTER: Maybe the children will save us in the end from our poor decisions about our planet | SaltWire

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

It may be years later, possibly decades or even centuries later, that our rush to profit comes back to bite us. Take oil, for example. We realized that we weren’t strong enough to do some of the heavier work, and even horses couldn’t produce the necessary lifting and hauling and transporting power, and this oil stuff seemed like the answer to our prayers. So we drilled, and pumped, and pipe-lined it to where we wanted it, and boasted of all the money we had made.

We do love our planet, but we love the financial and mechanical benefits of oil too. What to do? You’d think it would be an easy choice to make – the convenience of petroleum derivatives, or the continuation of life on Earth? This is where the biologists come to the rescue. They tell us that if we reduce and eventually terminate our relationship with oil, our dear old planet will forgive us, but we’d better make some changes ASAP, because time is ‘of the essence’.

Politicians are the ones who could sort this out, if they wanted to, but they’re too fixated on taxes from heavy industry, jobs for constituents, and their own cozy relationship with the oil industry. The biologists are ignored, the economists serve up what investors want to hear, the Industrialists deny the biological facts, and the politicians amuse us with bread and circuses. I’m not sure what the churches are doing.
