That disconnection, coupled with rampant inefficiency, productivity, and poor physical and mental health is a death knell for society in general.
There is so much waste in our health-care systems and paying more people more money is not going to fix it. A public health care system cannot save everybody or it will literally bankrupt the state and its residents. Especially when the residents are demographically older and the majority are irresponsibly unhealthy.
The tendency to over-consume and take on too much debt seems to only be exacerbated by more income. Newfoundland and Labrador is a poster child for broken provincial finances. This was exacerbated by its oil boom and the resulting expansion of unsustainable government spending and standards of living.
Generation X is now reaching the very young public service retirement age and are checking out. These are valuable and wise public servants in the prime of their careers and lives. We supported them as they were educated and built their lives. When we need them the most, they are leaving with pensions based on their best five or six years of service, regardless of their lifetime contributions, plan performance, unfunded liabilities, or the number of contributors to their pension plan.
