Nova Scotia's Doris Ogilvie, Commissioner on the Status of Women in Canada, 1964. Public domain.- SS Newcastle sailed from Halifax to Britain with a large cargo of barrelled apples. From the 1860s until the Second World War, apples were a booming cross-Atlantic export business for Nova Scotia apple producers, especially to Britain.

The Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association was formed in 1863 to encourage apple production and shipping to export markets. Further, “The completion of a railway from Halifax to Windsor in 1858 and Annapolis Royal by 1869 marked the beginning of a new era for the farmers of the Annapolis Valley.” Later, improved steamship services and reduced freight rates “from Halifax to Britain permitted regular shipments of apples to arrive in satisfactory condition.

Coleman had been warned by a naval sailor that the Mont Blanc was carrying highly explosive cargo. His station was 750 feet from the centre of the blast. After the Bird Commission, Ogilvie went on to serve as Chair of the Commission of the International Year of the Child in 1979, reflecting her deep advocacy for children. Besides being a mother of four daughters, she was also known as a lifelong scholar and social pioneer.- The Lunenburg Industrial Foundry & Engineering company began its operations on the harbour front in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia - manufacturing kitchen wood stoves to marine steelwork and propellers and everything in between.

Sir Wilfred Laurier was Prime Minister at the time and the bilingual Lord Grey was known to be a naval enthusiast. He later encouraged Laurier to establish a navy, which eventually would be created through the Naval Service Act in 1910. Before this, he also helped establish an agreement for Canada to assume control of the last British garrisons at Halifax and in Esquimalt, British Columbia.
