“There have been over 80 emergency department closures this summer, representing more than 1,700 hours that people could not access emergency care in their communities,” Shamji said.
The province has also asked the professional colleges regulating doctors and nurses to speed accreditation of those trained in other countries. The University Health Network in Toronto is “seeing a slight reduction in volumes in September from the peak months over the summer,” spokeswoman Gillian Howard said of individual patient visits to emergency at Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals.
“Doug Ford and Sylvia Jones have repeatedly told us that our health-care system is not in crisis, and Ontarians are receiving the care they need in a timely manner,” said Shamji, describing the data as “damning.”
