Samsonov was hurt on a rush, stopping a Carter Verhaeghe shot just 37 seconds into the second period. Leafs defenceman, tracking Verhaeghe and ultimately taking a tripping penalty on the play, lost his balance and slid hard into Samsonov, the Leafs’ top goalie this season. Samsonov’s left shoulder seemed to get the worst of the collision, but he also did the splits and was pushed hard into his goalpost. He lay on his stomach after the play, immobile until the team’s trainers tended to him on the ice.
He came into the game with a 4-4 record in the playoffs, an .895 save percentage and 3.27 goals against average in backstopping the Leafs to their first series win in 19 years.Veteran
