THUNDER BAY – Internet service was disrupted for hours at both of Thunder Bay's post-secondary institutions on Thursday.
The issue caused prolonged outages of the schools' internet service, websites, and email service beginning mid-morning Thursday, In a statement, Lakehead University said the disruption was caused by a fibre cut on a primary link between Thunder Bay and Sudbury. “This service is provided by ORION, Ontario’s optical research network,” the university’s Technology Services Centre said in an email. “At the same time a backup circuit using a different service was impacted by a configuration challenge. The backup circuit has now been restored to service, enabling connectivity to the University.”
ORION continues to work with its infrastructure partner to repair the primary circuit between Thunder Bay and Sudbury, the school added. This is a developing story and will be updated.
