Recommended from EditorialKinney is editor of the Progress Report, the media arm of left-wing advocacy group Progress Alberta, and has repeatedly sparred with EPS over access to information and media events, which he claims have been cut off due to his critical coverage. Engel says Kinney was invited to the Feb. 1 event by Ellis’s public safety and emergency services ministry. Engel said Kinney attended EPS headquarters, checked in with security and was granted an access pass.
In his article on the incident, Kinney claimed Derocher was in his “personal space” throughout the interaction and “got so close to me that he touched my elbow and side with the butt of his gun.” Kinney said Derocher “refused” to give him space when asked. The day after the incident, Engel emailed Edmonton police asking that audio and video of the interaction be preserved.Article content
Crowe also asked why Kinney “saw fit to attend a media event at an EPS facility when he has no media accreditation with the EPS.” He added that Kinney is barred from attending media events at EPS facilities pending an “accreditation review,” regardless of whether or not the event was organized by the police service.
