Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health, reflects on three years of COVID-19. - Communications Nova ScotiaHis eyes are blue. A tired blue. I wondered if they were once brighter.

“I first became aware of something unusual, respiratory illness happening in Wuhan, China right after Christmas in 2019,” Strang recalled of the first rumbling of what would later be called COVID-19, the virus that would stop the world. As I told him what I recalled: How we went from a presumptive case to a confirmed case to community spread to someone dead in just three weeks, I watched Strang’s blue eyes. His pupils changed and become glassy. It hurt him to recall that time.Strang gives credit to and speaks fondly of then-premier Stephen McNeil. McNeil’s support and concern for the public made Nova Scotia’s response more direct than other provinces.

When vaccines became more available to Nova Scotians in 2021, we lined up. Remembering the frantic days of waiting for age cohorts and scrolling the vaccine booking webpage, gripping your health card feels so long ago. But after a year of uncertainty, it was strangely thrilling.“It certainly was disheartening,” Strang said.“At the time we said it was likely less severe and that turned out to be true. The other thing that became clear early on was the vaccines.

Still, Strang is heartened by the strength of Nova Scotians and the hard work put in over the blur of a pandemic.
