Computer “reminders” are quickly replacing more old\u002Dfashioned ways of remembering things.
Fortunately, I had set a “reminder” on my iPhone last week that flashed the message: “Remember to do a column on reminders.”Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. Of course, we humans have always had methods of reminding ourselves about stuff.
When something’s really important, I sometimes leave an unexpected object in the hallway leading to our front door, like, say, a large elephant statue, so I’ll remember there’s something to remember. That way, when I’m heading out at night I can say to myself: They also remember our phone numbers, appointments and chores. I get several daily dinging messages telling me to remember to move the car, buy milk, take out the recycling — and turn on my phone’s ringer in the morning so I‘ll hear all those other dings.
Magazines constantly remind us to renew, hotels remind us what time we’re expected to check in — even if we won’t be staying there for another two months. Book a flight and you’ll get continuous email reminders from airlines, and 11 travel websites with names like Trip-it, Flip-it and Zip-it that all are secretly tracking your travel plans.
