Columnist John DeMont as the world junior hockey tournament draws to a close: 'Sport is one of those transcendent things: it lifts us out of ourselves. It injects drama into our workday lives. It makes us feel part of something bigger.'
They touch something deep inside. Despite their straightforward nature — who puts the most balls in the basket or pucks in the net — they offer those who sit in the stands something complex, mysterious, maybe even magical.
There is even a bit of shared history since so many of us, at some point, laced on the skates in a postage-stamp-sized backyard rink. For spectators, some of that thrill is experienced at a basic, tribal level, which is why we proudly, sometimes pugnaciously, wear our team colours right out there for everyone to see.
Sport is not real life; even the most hard-bitten fans know that. Then again, we are not always looking for reality.
