The police claim there’s nothing they can do. Although a trained psychologist, Eve ignores any advice she would give a client, withdraws, refuses to eat and dwindles to borderline catatonic. Too much time has passed for a safe termination. Eve, raging, decides on a plan. She’ll have the baby in Montreal, where Michel’s family live . She’ll give the baby up for adoption. She will have nothing do with “it.” And there will be no mention of this event ever again.

Liz had just retired and was looking forward to some quiet, busy, loving years with her husband, George. Then he died unexpectedly, a loss she is still, as they say, processing — much of the narrative is addressed by Liz to a photo of George. Ginny, so dependable, so responsible, is being stretched to the limit by domestic concerns, including care for her aging in-laws, a burden which should be placed on other shoulders. But she can’t turn away. Her mother-in-law is a harridan but her father-in-law an angel and counting on her.
