The NDP can\u0027t even explain what they mean by offering a curriculum for minority groups

Language classes only take up a limited portion of the day, however — this isn’t the same as translating the entire curriculum, which is what the NDP purports to do.Article content“School authorities have the flexibility to develop or acquire locally developed courses to address particular student and/or community needs, including language and culture courses,” Alberta’s Education Minister Adriana LaGrangeprograms in Arabic, Chinese, German, Spanish and Ukrainian.
The same case doesn’t present for the NDP’s plan. The number of Tagalog and Somali speakers in Alberta is relatively low compared to the rest of the population. Statistics Canadathat 2.6 per cent of Albertans say their mother tongue is Tagalog, while 0.3 say it is Somali. In terms of ethnic origin, 6.1 per cent of the province’s population is Filipino, while 0.2 per cent is Somali. Neither are languages of global business.
By the numbers, there’s a slightly stronger numbers case for teaching an entire curriculum in Tagalog. When it comes to Somali, if Alberta was to offer a full curriculum to every group that made up at least 0.2 per cent of the population because that’s the diverse, equitable and inclusive thing to do, we wouldn’t have much state capacity to do much teaching with the resources left over.
Without a good numbers case, the NDP resorts to attacking education in the western tradition. Now, the western tradition teaches things like empirical science, critical thought, individual agency and the rule of law; Western values include cosmopolitanism and democracy. It is no shame to incorporate these values into public education.
If the Albertan curriculum is being demonized for being based in the western tradition, which is practically unavoidable, so be it. But it’s a strange line of criticism to take, considering how cosmopolitan it is in practice. In
