Usually, when you make the biggest movie of all time, it doesn’t take 13 years for a follow-up. What was the hold up? “The decision was not to make just one [sequel]. If we were going to do that, we would have been back in the marketplace after five years or so. The decision was to make four movies and front-load all of the development — the design, the writing — so that when we made them, we could do it in bunches. … Now, if we get some momentum in our pop culture, then people won’t have to whine about us being gone so long next time.
“We didn’t. I know that’s a story around the first film … We didn’t wait around at all for this one. We knew exactly what we needed to do and exactly where we needed to put resources. We knew water simulations were a big part of that, facial performance capture techniques were an important part of that.
