Blame it on the federal Liberals\u0027 sneaky escalator provision, which ties the price to inflation

But the Liberal government is set to kill the buzz, thanks to one of its most shabby pieces of legislation. In 2017, then finance minister Bill Morneau included a two per cent hike in beer taxes in his budget. More iniquitous was the decision to increase the price on beer, wine and spirits every year thereafter at the rate of inflation — an escalator provision that next April will increase beer taxes by 6.3 per cent.
Beer Canada, the voice of Canada’s beer industry, estimates the newest hike, added to increased operating costs and other provincial and federal tax increases, could increase beer retail prices by six to nine per cent next year. In Ontario, that would take a case of 24 of Coors Original over $50 and a tall can of Coors at a Leafs game to $13.35.Article content
The cost increase is eye-popping enough, but what is truly galling is that the finance minister will be able to stand in the House of Commons and claim that the government has not imposed any new taxes on alcohol. Technically, that’s true. But that’s the iniquity of an escalator tax — it severs the link between an increase in taxation and ministerial responsibility.
