Team Canada East went 1-3 in the round robin, before upsetting first-place Team Canada West 4-1 in the semifinals. The United States, featuring five NHL draft picks in 2022, defeated Team Canada East 5-2 in the gold-medal game. Crane, a five-foot-nine, and 173-pound forward, scored one goal – the game-winner in a 3-1 win over Latvia – and added two assists in six games.
Crane said he went into the Canada East’s selection camp hoping to provide leadership but admitted his appointment as team captain was a surprise. McNeill contributed three assists in six games and provided steady defensive play among the team’s top-four defencemen, said McGuigan. “He got better from there, really impressed the rest of the staff and the guys from Hockey Canada and turned some heads.”
