Said Acadia First Nation Chief Deborah Robinson: “To the students, the teachers and support staff, I can’t say enough of the important work that you are doing to show the youth that yes, every child does matter.”

PLYMOUTH, YARMOUTH COUNTY, NS – At one point during the student presentations, Acadia First Nation Chief Deborah Robinson could be seen whispering the words, “It’s all so beautiful.”

“I almost think of reconciliation like reconcili-Action. This, is an example of reconcili-Action. Thank you Plymouth,” she had said prior to the ribbon cutting for the crosswalk, as students from the school lined both sides of this new addition to the school property. Every Child Matters is a movement that has come about as a result of the terrible and horrific history of the residential schools in Canada – during which time children, some as young as three, were forcibly taken from their families and placed in Indian residential schools. Students at Plymouth school spell out the words Every Child Matters during an event recognizing truth and reconciliation at the school on Dec. 2. TINA COMEAU PHOTOThe children removed from their families and culture were forced to learn English, adopt the customs of the country's white majority and made to erase their own culture and upbringing from their lives. But at Plymouth School, the children’s voices shined light on the future.

The classes at Plymouth School in Yarmouth County each gave a presentation on stage in keeping with the theme 'Every Child Matters' during an event recognizing truth and reconciliation at the school on Dec. 2. TINA COMEAU PHOTO
