Corner Brook will mark its civic holiday on Feb. 20

Corner Brook will mark its civic holiday on Monday, Feb. 23. The day has always coincided with Corner Brook Winter Carnival’s family fun day in Margaret Bowater Park, but not everyone gets the day off. – SaltWire Network File PhotoCORNER BROOK, N.L. — If you’re lucky enough to live or work in Corner Brook, you may have the day off on Monday, Feb. 20.

New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan all mark family days on the third Monday in February. Nova Scotia marks the day as Heritage Day and Prince Edward Island has Islander Day. Manitoba also observes the day as Louis Riel Day. McCormick said February is a tough month for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from many perspectives, including the impact on mental health.

“Acknowledging the challenge that is winter in Newfoundland and Labrador, combined with the fact that so many other provinces observe a holiday, it just makes sense to make something formal for this province so that people can spend time with family, have a reset, take care of themselves and just get a break.”

Before the amalgamation of all the province’s school boards into one, schools in the city also closed for the day.
