Children have fun climbing up and sliding down the giant pumpkins at the Shelburne County Giant Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 8. KATHY JOHNSONSHELBURNE, NS – A giant pumpkin grown by John Porter of Cape Sable Island claimed it’s second championship title of the fall season at the Shelburne County Giant Pumpkin Festival weigh-in on Oct. 8, tipping the scale at 1,394 pounds.Porter’s pumpkin was also the champion at the annual Clark’s Harbour Pumpkin and Squash Weigh-in on Oct.
In third place was Francis Campbell of Sandy Point with an 894-pound pumpkin. Campbell was also named best sportsman.Shelburne County giant pumpkin growers Francis Campbell , Craig Swim and John Porter watch and socialize while their giant pumpkins are weighed at this year’s Shelburne County Giant Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 8. “I think with this pumpkin race going on it might inspire a lot more people to grow," in said in reference to the regatta that took place in Shelburne for the first year."We need some new growers in the area,” he said, adding “good seeds, good earth and good weather” is what’s needed to grow the giant gourds.
