Stories of fear and resilience from Alberta, B.C., Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories.

EDMONTON—Canada is a massive country with a huge diversity of environments: frozen tundra, thick forests, sandy beaches. But right now a disturbing number of places are all facing the same threat —Firefighters were battling blazes in British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories this week. Collectively, thousands of people have been forced from their homes.

“She said I don’t know what it is, but it’s like I’m waiting for something to happen. I don’t know what it is, but look after your kids,” Desjarlais recalled.Desjarlais’s community is at the epicentre of a more than 21,000-hectare wildfire that has caused multiple evacuation orders and alerts in the Peace River region of northeast B.C.

But it’s still a precarious situation, with heavy smoke clouding visibility and the possibility of further road closures. It’s not yet clear when Blueberry River First Nations residents will be able to return. Howse is from the East Prairie Métis Settlement in northern Alberta and has been helping fight fires after some 300 residents were evacuated on May 5.

“You put in all your effort … and at the end of the day, and in the morning, it feels like you didn’t do anything at all,” Howse said. “But you keep trying.”
