A U.S. criminal complaint alleges Natalia Burlinova, 39, received specific orders and funding from Russia’s main security service, then flagged potentially pro-Moscow program participants.
released this week alleges Natalia Burlinova, 39, received specific orders and funding from Russia’s main security service, the FSB, then flagged potentially pro-Moscow participants to an FSB handler.
“Natalia, we had talks with an FBI agent and were interviewed about your program, about whether you tried to recruit us or not,” Burlinova recalled being told. The Star has spoken to numerous people who applied for and participated in the program, who said they looked at it as an interesting professional opportunity to meet leading Russian thinkers and officials.
Burlinova said she had no knowledge of the presence or involvement of intelligence or security services in Ulyanovsk. But she noted that the 2021 conference was considered an important event for the image and profile of the region. “We are not a pro-Kremlin organization as they describe us,” Burlinova said, referring to the criminal complaint. “We are a platform for conversation in Russia.”
